UK electrical engineering outfit EDS has won a contract with VBMS to carry out cable termination and testing at the 41.5MW Blyth demonstration offshore wind farm in the UK.
The EDF-developed wind farm will feature 66kV array cables made by French company Nexans.
“We are delighted that the market leaders in subsea cable install have recognised our expertise and are therefore trusting us to assist them on the Blyth project,” EDS managing director Ken Ritson said.
“This move towards 66kV requires a level of experience and competence higher than any that’s ever been required for array cable installation in the past,” he said.
“We have recently made a significant investment of over £750,000 on staff training, new innovation and equipment to ensure that we are best placed within the industry to meet the challenges ahead.”
The wind farm will be located off the Northumberland coast in the north east of England and will initially comprise five turbines.
It is scheduled to start operating by the third quarter of 2017 and will feature beefed-up MHI Vestas V164 8.3MW turbines.
