A North Carolina judge has quashed an effort to halt the 208MW Amazon Wind Farm US East project, allowing construction to continue.
A Pasquotank County couple appealed the project, however, administrative law judge Melissa Owens Lassiter this week said the wind farm was properly vetted by regulators and is not subject to additional review.
Developer Iberdrola Renewables started construction on the project, formerly known as Desert Wind, almost a year ago. Commercial operation is slated to start later this year.
Amazon Web Services contracted with Iberdrola to build and operate the wind farm to supply power for the company’s cloud data centres.
The developer is erecting 104 Gamesa G114 2MW turbines with a 93m tower and 114m rotor diameter.
The wind farm will be the first in North Carolina and is located on about 22,000 acres leased from more than 60 local landowners.
Landowner payments and taxes are expected to inject more than $1.1m into the local economy each year.
