Nordic Yards is set to load out the first part of the split jacket foundation for the 900MW DolWin gamma substation.
The shipyard completed the 5000 tonne steel construction after some 18 months. The second part of the foundation will be loaded out next week from the Nordic Yards facility in Stralsund.
The two units will be shipped to the construction site north of Borkum island in the North Sea, some 162km away from the Dorpen West onshore substation, almost 30 meters deep.
The topside, currently being finalized in Warnemunde, is slated to be loaded out this summer. Commissioning of the grid hub is scheduled for 2017.
Alstom, the general contractor for Dutch transmission system operator TenneT, handed the building contract to Nordic Yards in February 2013.
It is the fourth offshore substation to be built by Nordic Yards and will be the last one. The shipyard is now set to build cruise ships after being acquired by Hong Kong-based Genting Group.
Together with the Lloyd Werft shipyard in Bremerhaven, the shipyard will be managed as the Lloyd Werft Group.
