Danish transmission operator Energinet.dk has given the internal green light for a subsea link with the UK electricity network and improved cross-border links with the German system.
The board of the company has approved Dkr11bn in spending on the two projects — roughly €1.5bn — with final sign off now required by the country’s energy minister.
The 740km Viking Link will connect Denmark to England and is being pursued in partnership with UK operator National Grid.
Connections with Germany will be strengthened by a 400kV transmission line running south from near Idomlund in north Jutland and down through Niebull across the border. It will then be tied into TenneT’s network in the north of Germany.
Energinet.dk technical director Torben Glar Nielsen said the infrastructure will provide a socio-economic boost to Denmark worth “billions” by providing wind farms with wider markets and better prices.
