Adwen and Winergy have unveiled the gearbox for the manufacturer’s AD 8-180 offshore wind turbine prototype.
The gearbox, with an input torque of about 10,000 kilonewton-metres and 86 tonnes in weight, is the largest built to date, the partners said.
It is part of a medium-speed drive train concept that will help reduce the levelized cost of energy of Adwen’s new offshore wind turbine, they said.
Winergy has manufactured four gearboxes for Adwen with the goal of having them fully validated in three phases, the last one being field tests with the AD 8-180 prototype in Bremerhaven.
“We continue pushing the limits of the industry with our AD 8-180, this time with the largest gearbox ever built,” Adwen chief executive Luis Alvarez said.
“This key component has performed extremely well during the exhaustive validation process which makes us confident the first prototype of the turbine will meet and even exceed our expectations in terms of performance and reliability when it is installed.”
