Ramboll has won a €4m contract to design foundations and a substation for the 400MW Binhai North 2 offshore wind farm in China.
The Danish engineering outfit said today it is the first company from outside the Asian country to secure work in the burgeoning Chinese offshore wind sector.
State Power Investment Corporation’s 100-turbine project is located 22km off the coast of the Jiangsu province in an area prone to earthquakes with soft seabed conditions, Ramboll said.
“This puts unique demands on the design and construction of the foundations that will be placed 60 m below sea bed, in order to support the turbines in depths of 14-18 metres,” it added.
Ramboll will also design the transformers, breakers and cables.
“This project is exciting because the soft soil conditions in the Jiangsu province challenges us to design differently from what we are used to in the Northern European market,” said Ramboll project director Søren Juel Petersen.
“The technical challenges and the sheer scale of the project requires us to draw on skills from the entire business, and this is where we see the advantages of being a multi-disciplinary consultancy.”
