Vattenfall and Stadtwerke München have exported first power from the 288MW Sandbank offshore wind farm in the German North Sea.
A total of 20 Siemens 4MW turbines are installed at the construction site 90km west of the island of Sylt, the developers said. Full commissioning of the turbines is now underway.
Jack-up vessel MPI Adventure is installing the towers, nacelles and rotor blades, while service operations vessel Acergy Viking is being used to assist during commissioning.
Turbine installation is due to finish about three months earlier than originally planned, Vattenfall and Stadtwerke München said. In total, Sandbank will feature 72 turbines.
The wind farm is expected to reach full operation in early 2017.
“The commissioning works show that it is possible to start exporting power only shortly after a turbine is erected,” said Vattenfall responsible package manager for wind turbines Hergen Stolle.
“Together with our partners we successfully transferred our know-how from the DanTysk project to Sandbank,” he added.
