Germany’s federal government, along with the German coastal states on the North and Baltic Seas, have signed an agreement with TSOs, TenneT, Amprion and 50Hertz to connect 30GW of offshore wind energy by 2030.
States involved included the Hanseatic cities of Bremen and Hamburg and the federal states of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, North Rhine- Westphalia, Lower Saxony and Schleswig-Holstein
The parties said they will now closely coordinate the necessary steps to achieve the 30 GW goal.
Tim Meyerjürgens, COO of TenneT said that the planning, approval and construction of the infrastructure for the development of 30 gigawatts of offshore wind energy is a “long time coming” for the transmission system operators as well as for the federal and state approval authorities.
Meyerjürgens added that the agreement showed the strong will of the stakeholders involved.
As part of its “Easter Package”, the German government set new targets of 30 GW by 2030, 40 GW by 2035 and at least 70 GW by 2045.
Peter Barth, Managing Director of Amprion Offshore GmbH said: “The expansion of offshore wind energy is a key factor for the energy transition and the path to a climate-neutral society.”
He explained that now amendments to the law have been made, practical implementation will be key to achieving the targets.
Frank Golletz, Technical Director of 50Hertz: “50Hertz will use all of its energy and entrepreneurial know- how that we have been able to build up over the past few years to help develop the wind energy potential in the Baltic Sea and, in the future, also in the North Sea,” he said.
“In order to achieve the ambitious expansion goals, we have to network even more in the future – both technologically in the form of “meshed” offshore networks and internationally with partners across national borders.”
