Japan’s government has finished accepting bids for a second major round of offshore wind power tenders to build 1800MW of capacity in four areas.
The results will be announced by the end of March 2024, or even sooner, to December this year, depending on how smooth the process is, according to the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry.
Japan’s offshore wind power market is set to grow as the government aims to install up to 10GW of offshore wind capacity by 2030, and up to 45GW by 2040, as part of its decarbonisation push.
The latest auction covers four areas, including a 700MW site off the coast of Murakami-Tainai in Niigata prefecture and a 356MW site off the coast of Happo-Noshiro in Akita prefecture in northern Japan.
Japanese trading house Itochu and Tokyo Gas are among companies considering bidding in the second round, the Nikkei business daily reported on 29 June.
