Spanish company Navantia has started manufacturing the offshore substation for ScottishPower’s 714MW East Anglia 1 wind farm off the UK coast.
Navantia said it has begun cutting steel for the structure’s so-called cable deck at its Puerto Real yard in Cadiz.
The 7700-tonne topside and jacket will be built at the site in southern Spain.
The job will employ an average of 350 workers over the next 18 months, according to the company.
Navantia signed the contract to deliver the substation in November.
The wind farm’s first 7MW turbines are set to be installed in the summer of 2019.
