RWE has confirmed that it is laying off members of its US offshore team, the latest developer to scale back its US ambitions in the wake of US President Donald Trump’s federal permitting freeze.
A RWE spokesperson told reNEWS: “With the current regulatory and political environment, we have made the decision to reduce the scope of our development activities and the size of our US Offshore team.
“As RWE, we remain committed with our US business to advancing energy projects that meet rising energy demand, create jobs, and invest in communities.”
The developer declined to specify how many employees were laid off or how many positions were eliminated as part of the cuts, but did say that the move follows on from previously announced delays.
“Last year we announced that, due to market conditions and increased risk profile, we would delay certain expenditures related to our US offshore wind development projects,” the spokesperson said.
RWE has 5.9GW worth of offshore lease holdings in the US.
RWE’s Head of Development for offshore holdings Amanda Lefton has also left the developer and taken up a post as Acting Commissioner in New York’s Department of Environmental Conservation, though it is understood that her departure is not related to RWE’s move to trim its US workforce.
