Heavy lift specialist ALE has completed the transportation, craneage and electro-mechanical installation of 16 turbines for the Loma Blanca 2 wind farm in Argentina.
ALE said a total of 176 items needed to be transported 80km from Almirante Stomi port in Puerto Madryn to the project site.
It transported the components via abnormal load transport, including specialist wind blade trailers.
The company then offloaded the components using an adapted crawler crane in order to negotiate the site’s narrow roads.
The roads between the turbines were only six metres wide in parts, so ALE said it adapted a crane with the latest SPMT technologies.
After installation, the company was able to move the crane in one piece, instead of disassembling its sections for reassembly in the next lift position each time, the company said.
ALE said it used several cranes to lift each item, with the largest being a 69-metre-long blade and the heaviest a 111-tonne rotor.
Three-blade trailers, two lowbed trailers and 20 axle lines of SPMT were also utilised on the job.
In total, the 200MW Loma Blanca wind farm will feature 64 turbines when completed, ALE said.
The project is being built in four phases.
