Spanish utility Iberdrola has started commercial operations at the 111MW Cavar wind farm complex in Spain.
Cavar, which was developed jointly with Caja Rural de Navarra, is Iberdrola’s largest wind farm built in Spain since 2012.
The €100m project consists of four wind farms made up of 32 Siemens Gamesa 3.4-132 turbines, located in the municipalities of Cadreita and Valtierra in Navarre.
It was supported by green finance from the European Investment Bank, Iberdrola said.
Construction took 12 months to complete, has generated over €80m worth of procurement from suppliers, many of which are based in the nearby towns and surrounding area.
Iberdrola and Caja Rural pledged to protect biodiversity and so are closely monitoring several adult specimens of Egyptian vulture that nest in the vicinity of the complex.
The birds have been equipped with GPS location systems to help track them during migration.
“Thanks to new telemetric techniques, this will provide precise insight on the way the reproductive population of this species uses space at a regional level,” Iberdrola said.
Iberdrola chief executive Ignacio Galan (pictured) said: “(Cavar) is a great example of our potential to create jobs and drive prosperity if we pursue a low-carbon economy and steer our investments towards promising sectors, such as renewables, smart grids and energy storage.”
