Northern Indiana Public Service Company is planning to source electricity from three wind farms totalling 802MW.
The announcement is part of the energy provider’s plans to be coal-free by 2028 and its ‘Your Energy, Your Future’ initiative focused on delivering a more affordable and sustainable energy mix.
NIPSCO has finalised agreements with the projects’ three developers – Apex Clean Energy, EDP Renewables North America and NextEra Energy Resources.
The wind farms are scheduled to be delivering power by late next year.
NextEra Energy Resources is developing the 400MW Jordan Creek plant in Benton and Warren counties.
Jordan Creek will feature about 160 turbines and supply electricity directly to NIPSCO.
Apex Clean Energy is building the 300MW Roaming Bison facility in Montgomery county, which will comprise 107 turbines and supply power directly to NIPSCO under a 20-year agreement.
The 102MW Rosewater project in White County is being developed by EDPR. NIPSCO has entered into a joint venture and ownership agreement with the 25-turbine project.
All three projects were selected following a review of bids submitted through a request for proposal as part of NIPSCO’s 2018 integrated resource plan process.
Approval from the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission is still required to source power from the wind farms.
NIPSCO president Violet Sistovaris said: “We’re excited for the opportunity to add more home-grown renewable energy in Indiana.
“In addition to the economic benefits that projects like these add, the transition we’re making in our electric generation equates to an estimated $4bn in cost-savings for customers over the long-term.”
NIPSCO expects to announce additional renewable projects and plans to issue a second RFP later this year.
