The Illinois Municipal Electric Agency is to receive 50MW of electricity from the 194MW Green River wind farm under a 15-year power purchase agreement.
Green River, which is located in Lee and Whiteside counties in Illinois, is being developed by Geronimo Energy and is scheduled to come online in October.
It will comprise 74 turbines spread across 526 hectares.
The agreement means about 10% of the agency’s electricity will now come from renewable sources.
Illinois Municipal Electric Agency president and chief executive Kevin Gaden said: “This project is a win for all involved. As we continue to diversify our resource portfolio, this project fits our needs to cost effectively add another source of green energy.
“Our portfolio already includes wind-generated power from the Lee-DeKalb wind energy center, two completed solar demonstration projects in St Charles and Rantoul, three more solar demonstration projects that are under construction in Rock Falls, Naperville and Altamont, and two municipally-owned hydroelectric facilities in Rock Falls and Peru, Illinois.
“We are also quite proud that with this purchase we are supporting in-state power generation, just as we do with our other wind farm.”
The Illinois Municipal Electric Agency supplies power to 32 municipal utility systems across the state.
