Police are investigating after a 23-year-old man died on the construction site of SSE Renewables’ Viking wind farm in Scotland.
Emergency services were called to the site in the Upper Kergord area of Shetland on the morning of Sunday 5 June, but the man died at the scene.
A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances and the Health and Safety Executive will be informed in due course.”
Scotland’s Health and Safety Executive said it has now been made aware of the event and is helping the police with their enquiries.
BAM Nuttall, the civil engineering company working on-site at Viking, confirmed “the tragic death of a colleague” following the incident.
A spokesperson said: “Our condolences are with their family, and support is being made available to them and to members of the team.
“An investigation is underway and we’re working closely with our client and the relevant authorities.”
SSE Renewables took a final investment decision for the 443MW Viking wind farm in June 2020, with the project due to come online in 2024.
The company’s head of onshore projects Derek Hastings said: “We are devastated by the news and our thoughts and condolences are with the family, friends, and colleagues of the young man who tragically died.
“We are working closely with BAM Nuttall and the relevant authorities to understand what happened.”
