SP Energy Networks has launched a £1.4bn investment programme to deliver key onshore transmission upgrades across central and southern Scotland.
The contracts, part of a £5.4bn supplier initiative over the next decade, aim to accelerate grid readiness for new housing, industry and clean energy projects while boosting UK energy security.
“This is a defining moment for our energy future,” said SP Energy Networks chief executive Nicola Connelly.
“These contracts are not just about infrastructure-they’re about enabling a cleaner, greener Britain,” she added.
The strategic partnerships span new high-voltage substations, overhead lines, and supporting engineering and construction works.
Seventeen of the 19 suppliers are UK-based, with Morgan Sindall Infrastructure named sole contractor for the Denny to Wishaw Network Optimisation project.
Energy minister Michael Shanks said: “This is the clean power transition in action-investing in British supply chains that will bring skilled jobs and economic growth to communities in Scotland and beyond.”
The five-year contracts can be extended to 10, offering long-term certainty and supporting skills development and innovation.
The announcement follows ScottishPower’s pledge to double UK investment to £24bn by 2028, two-thirds of which is earmarked for electricity networks.
SP Energy Networks will submit its 2026–2031 business plan to Ofgem later this year.
