The Spanish region of Catalonia is aiming to develop as much as 62GW of renewable energy by mid-century, as part of plans to achieve climate neutrality in the energy sector by 2050.
Catalonia will require 12GW by 2030, of which 7GW would be solar and 5GW wind power, the region’s government said.
It added that the figures must make it possible, on the one hand, to deal with the planned closure of nuclear power plants, and on the other hand, to make wind energy account for 50% of the country’s electricity generation and photovoltaics 43% in 2050.
The plans are part of the region’s Energy Prospective of Catalonia 2050, which was prepared by the Catalan Energy Institute (ICAEN) for the government.
The Energy Prospective of Catalonia 2050 was presented by Catalonia Minister of Climate Action, Food and Rural Agenda Teresa Jorda i Roura and ICAEN director Marta Morera i Marce on 4 February.
