Total corporate power purchase agreements for renewable electricity have already reached 7.2GW in 2018, surpassing the 5.4GW procured in 2017, according to Bloomberg NEF.
The ‘2H Corporate Energy Market Outlook’, published today by Bloomberg NEF, said 60% of the market this year – some 4.2GW – has been in the US.
Facebook is the largest corporate buyer so far in 2018, having secured deals for 1.1GW of clean power, the report added.
Telecommunications giant AT&T came in second with 820MW, followed by aluminium manufacturers Norsk Hydro and Alcoa with 667MW and 524MW, respectively.
Companies are also leveraging aggregation models to pool electricity demand together, which has “opened the door for smaller companies to buy renewable energy”, Bloomberg NEF said.
The report also found that there has been an increase in corporate buying in Europe. Some 1.6GW of clean energy has been bought this year in the region, up from 1.1GW in the whole of 2017.
