Neoen has announced the Ako Battery, a 100MW/400MWh project in Japan’s Kansai region and its first large-scale battery investment in the country.
The company said the project will be located in Hyogo Prefecture and is expected to begin construction in the coming months with operations scheduled for 2028.
Neoen added it is collaborating with Equans and Toho on the project and secured a grid connection agreement with Kansai Electric Power Company in January 2026.
The four-hour duration battery will support the Japanese grid by enhancing stability and resilience.
The announcement was made at the French Japanese Business Forum in Tokyo during an official visit by French President Emmanuel Macron.
Neoen holds a global battery storage portfolio totalling 2.8GW/8.1GWh across seven countries.
“As a pioneer in battery storage, Neoen is extremely proud to be announcing Ako Battery, our first investment in Japan and a major step in our expansion in the region,” said Xavier Barbaro, group chief executive of Neoen.
“This achievement is impressive both in its scale and the speed of its delivery.”
