Hitachi Energy will establish a new UK Engineering Centre of Excellence in Glasgow to support upgrades to the country’s electricity grid.
Backed by a £1.7m grant from Scottish Enterprise, the £3m investment will create around 90 roles including specialist engineers and project managers.
The hub will focus on projects to strengthen the UK grid for the energy transition and will also form part of Hitachi’s global network of engineering centres.
Hitachi Energy UK and Ireland country managing director Laura Fleming said the new centre represents “a significant investment in Scotland” as the company expands towards 1000 employees in the UK by 2027.
Vice president and executive officer Hirohide Hirai added that the UK is “a very important country for the whole of the Hitachi Group” and the Glasgow hub is a key step in recruiting local talent.
Scottish climate action and energy secretary Gillian Martin welcomed the announcement while leading a delegation at World Expo Osaka to promote inward investment in the energy sector.
