The Liberal Democrats will tomorrow pledge to reduce UK greenhouse gas emissions by 75% by 2030 at its annual party conference in Bournemouth.
Climate spokeswoman Wera Hobhouse (pictured) will unveil a suite of measures designed to help the UK become carbon-neutral by 2030 in a keynote speech on 14 September.
The policy package includes aiming for 80% renewable power by 2030 while ending the sale of petrol and diesel cars, and small vans, by the same date.
In addition, the party will promise to put climate policy “at the heart of government at all levels” while creating “Citizens’ Climate Assemblies” to ensure “no one loses out”.
The climate measures will be augmented by requiring “finance and investment sectors to decarbonise” and planting 60m trees a year.
Hobhouse will say the UK needs to take “urgent action” to set the economy on a path towards net-zero emissions.
The Conservative government passed a law earlier this year requiring carbon emissions to be net zero by 2050.
“Setting a target is essential, but not enough. The government is not even on track to meet the UK’s old targets let alone new goals, making its commitments meaningless,” Hobhouse will say.
The Liberal Democrats’ climate blueprint will be put to a vote to party members on 16 September.
