Belgian energy producer Luminus has submitted a permit application for a 100MW battery project at the Ringvaart power plant in Ghent.
The storage park will be connected to the ELIA grid in the Ghent canal zone.
“The battery project provides an answer to the increasing need for flexibility and stability on the electricity grid,” said Luminus.
Once constructed, the site will have a capacity of 100MW and a storage capacity of 400MWh, which corresponds to the daily consumption of 42,000 families.
The aim is for the project to be commissioned by the end of 2026.
“As number one in wind energy on the mainland and hydropower in Belgium, we are fully committed to renewable energy,” said Luminus chief executive Grégoire Dallemagne
“With our battery projects, here in Ringvaart and also in Lixhe in Wallonia, we want to provide the necessary flexibility on the electricity grid and enable further growth of renewable energy.”
The 400MWh battery project at Ringvaart would replace Luminus’ expansion project to install two to six so-called open gas cycle gas turbines at the same location.
The existing power plant will remain in operation.
