Vattenfall is teaming up with Arge Netz and Man Energy Solutions on a power-to-gas plant in Germany that will produce hydrogen and synthetic gas made from renewable energy.
The Brunsbuttel HySynGas industrial park in Schleswig-Holstein will produce gas to power buses, trucks and ships and gas-fired power plants.
The partners plan to build an electrolyser at Brunsbuttel to produce at least 50MW of green hydrogen and a least 40 tonnes a day of synthetic methane.
Vattenfall Europe Innovation director Oliver Weinmann said: “We want to lay the foundation for the next stage of the energy transition with industrial added value and climate innovations on site.
“The technology is ready for use and the companies want to invest in the green energy future.
“However, the current legislative framework does not currently permit economic operation.”
The partners are therefore applying to the German Ministry of Economics for a so-called “real laboratory” to develop the project.
Arge Netz renewable energy managing director Stephan Frense said the location was chosen because it already offers large volumes of clean power.
“The aim is to increase the level of utilisation of renewable energies and to reduce the emission of climate-damaging CO2 through the use of regenerative gases, especially for buses of public transport and heavy trucks, as well as in shipping, gas-fired power plants and in industry,” he said.
