Sibsey Primary School in Lincolnshire has been getting up to speed with the offshore wind industry courtesy of the Triton Knoll project’s onshore cables contractor J Murphy & Sons.
Sam Wickins from J Murphy & Sons recently met with students and teachers at the school, a community neighbour of the Triton Knoll project, and explained more about the wind farm’s onshore cable installation and the typical activities involved in construction.
Since the turn of the year, the company has been engaging with local schools to educate young people about various aspects of the offshore wind industry – from the potential career opportunities and different types of construction work, to the measures put in place to mitigate against its impacts on the environment and local communities.
During the visit, Wickins explained the different construction activities taking place along the 57km onshore cable route, and demonstrated how the project is protecting local environments and water courses through an engaging science experiment.
The J Murphy & Sons team also facilitated a fun and interactive exercise, where groups of children were tasked with creating their own wind turbines.
Sibsey Primary School headteacher Graeme Wright said: “The children of Sibsey school have thoroughly enjoyed the partnership with the engineers from JMS, working at the Triton Knoll offshore wind farm.
“Children have learned about the project itself as well as engaging in enjoyable and educational workshops about wind power, protecting water courses and properties of materials. “
In addition to these workshops, children at Sibsey have discovered the range of jobs available on a project such as Triton Knoll through an assembly delivered to the older students.
“Sam Wickins and the team at JMS have been a real asset to our school this year and we are extremely grateful for their support and kindness.”
J Murphy & Sons team also donated time and expertise to help the school complete ground preparation works ready for a new outdoor classroom, enabling budget savings.
