Siemens Gamesa unveils 11MW offshore turbine

Siemens Gamesa has unveiled an offshore wind turbine that can reach top power of 11MW.

The German-Spanish manufacturer said the ‘DD Flex’ machine, featuring a 193-metre rotor from the 10MW iteration, can reach the new nameplate rating under specific site conditions.

It relies on “constant digital observations” to drive the power to 11MW, said the company as it launched the machine at WindEurope Offshore 2019 in Copenhagen on Tuesday.

“The SG 11.0-193 DD Flex is another example of how Siemens Gamesa constantly works to improve performance and provide greater value for our customers, ratepayers, and society-at-large,” said offshore chief executive Andreas Nauen.

“Digitalization allows us to increase the capacity of our current largest machine to 11 MW, boosting its annual energy production, while keeping the Levelized Cost of Energy (LCoE) down.

“In turn our customers can deliver more clean, reliable energy to end-users at lower overall prices.”

The turbine comes after the launch of a 10MW version, also featuring the 193-metre rotor.

The SG 11.0-193 DD Flex uses the 94-metre long Siemens Gamesa B94 Integral Blades.

A prototype is due to be installed shortly.

Siemens Gamesa will also soon install its thousandth offshore turbine and has confirmed orders for an additional 1000 offshore direct drive turbines, with installations planned for Europe, Taiwan the US, France and Japan.
