EDF Renewables is to sell electricity from a 33MW extension to the Folha Larga 1 wind farm in Brazil to thermoplastic resin producer Braskem, in what is the French company’s first corporate power purchase agreement in the South American country.
Construction of the extension to the existing 114MW project will start next year, with commissioning planned for 2021.
Folha Larga 1 is located 350km north-west of Salvador in the Bahia region of Brazil.
EDF Renewables chief operating officer Bruno Fyot said: “EDF Renewables has become a key player for large corporations looking to embark on the fight against climate change.
“Our track record of success over the past 10 years in France, the US, the UK, Mexico and China demonstrates the competitiveness of our solutions.
“With 1GW in wind and solar energy projects in Brazil, we are delighted to have sealed today, our first local long-term power purchase agreement with Braskem, one of the country’s largest energy consumers.
“The free market represents a genuine opportunity for businesses in Brazil and we hope to settle more contracts there shortly.”
EDF said the 33MW will add to the 970MW already operating or under development in the South American country.
