James Fisher and Sons’ subsidiary Strainstall has won a deal with marine engineers MacGregor to provide mooring monitoring for Statoil’s 30MW Hywind Scotland floating offshore wind demonstrator.
Strainstall will incorporate its strain ring monitoring sensors to MacGregor’s chain stoppers, which anchor each floating turbine to the seabed, to provide mooring load information.
Strainstall said the system senses tiny changes in tension to enable a better understanding of the load and fatigue life of the floating structures.
Hywind will consist of five Siemens 6MW turbines on floating foundations.
