Enercon has signed a memorandum of understanding with Canadian clean technology company Biome Renewables to explore the integration of Biome’s FeatherEdge noise reducing serration technology on Enercon turbines.

The agreement, announced at the HUSUM Wind show, aims to qualify the biomimetic technology for use on Enercon’s fleet, beginning with tests on the E-160 EP5 turbine model in Germany.

Enercon chief technology officer Jörg Scholle said: “Initial tests in close cooperation between Biome and our customer Schierloh Engineering in Germany indicate that further acoustical advantages for noise-sensitive sites could be possible with this technology.

“As partner to our customers for continuous improvements over the operating lifetime of Enercon turbines, we are jointly exploring this opportunity with Biome with the aim to create added value for our customers’ assets.”

Biome Renewables said the collaboration builds on earlier independent tests of FeatherEdge conducted in 2025. The next phase will include comprehensive IEC-standard noise testing across multiple modes and detailed engineering validation to ensure quality and integration with Enercon’s turbine designs.

Biome chief executive and chief technology officer Ryan Church said: “We are delighted in our partnership with Enercon – a trusted industry-leading OEM delivering premium solutions. Working collaboratively with Enercon, we can further the transition to a clean energy economy by reducing turbine noise and increasing the social and business case viability of wind power.”

He added: “Engineered with biomimetic design principles, FeatherEdge performance lies in how it emulates the silence of the owl’s flight. Combined with innovative materials and manufacturing to ensure robust durability and performance, FeatherEdge is poised to revolutionise turbine noise solutions for the wind power industry.”

The partnership is intended to enhance the acoustic performance of Enercon turbines and offer new solutions for wind farms operating in noise-sensitive locations.
