The German Environment Minister has called for an increase in the country’s renewable energy targets.
Svenja Schulze (pictured) tweeted today that the previous goal of 65% by 2030 is “no longer sufficient”.
The target should be raised to 75% or 80%, according to the Social Democratic Party politician.
“More needs to be done when expanding wind and sun,” stated Schulze on twitter.
“The previous goal of 65% green electricity share by 2030 is no longer sufficient. I assume that we need at least 75%, maybe even 80%.”
She added: “And I am optimistic that we can achieve that.”
Schulze also told the Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung newspaper that this will mean Germany will have to install more turbines and solar plants every year than currently planned.
The offshore wind target is currently 20GW, having been raised earlier this year from the previous 15GW goal.
