National Grid and TenneT Germany have announced plans to develop GriffinLink, a proposed multi-purpose interconnector linking British and German offshore wind.
The companies said the project was unveiled at the North Sea Summit in Hamburg and would support energy security, offshore wind connections and coordinated infrastructure planning.
GriffinLink would connect offshore wind in both countries to the British and German grids, marking what the partners describe as the first multi-purpose interconnector of its kind in Europe.
Ben Wilson, president of National Grid Ventures, said the project would enhance flexibility across energy systems.
“We are proud to work with TenneT Germany on this groundbreaking project that will enhance the diversity and flexibility in our energy systems,” said Wilson.
Tim Meyerjürgens, chief executive of TenneT Germany, said the scheme represents a milestone for cross-border cooperation.
“GriffinLink is the first project of its kind in Europe and will be a major milestone in cross-border energy security,” said Meyerjürgens.
The partners said hybrid interconnectors such as GriffinLink allow renewable electricity to be transported across borders to where it is needed most.
They added that the integrated approach could improve grid utilisation, lower costs and reduce impacts on coastal communities and the environment.
Ed Miliband, secretary of state for energy security and net zero, said the plans could deliver benefits for both countries.
“These ambitious plans by National Grid and TenneT Germany could deliver further benefits for both Britain and Germany,” said Miliband.
GriffinLink would build on National Grid’s 7.8GW interconnector portfolio and TenneT Germany’s 23GW portfolio, the companies said.
The project is expected to be operational by the late 2030s to support offshore wind deployment in the Northern Seas and rising electricity demand.
